Within the past week, there has been a series of wildfires that has impacted the Los Angeles area. Many people have lost their homes and properties have been destroyed. As Southern California tries to recover from these natural disasters, its impact will continue to be felt throughout the region.

Wildfires sweep across Southern California-specifically Los Angeles as residents are rescued by firefighters from the wails of the Canyon fires. Many properties and businesses have been demolished while city officials implement plans to rebuild and reignite order and structure.

On Thursday afternoon, August 7, the Canyon fire erupted in a rural, densely populated area of Ventura county. The explosion quickly spread to Los Angeles, which covered more than 1,000 acres of land near Lake Piru. Much black smoke circulated the air as the fire spread to other areas. The fire was also rapidly spreading to other parts of southern California, such as Malibu Beach, Gifford, Santa Clara, and Lancaster.

Many firefighters evacuated residents from their homes. Among Zach George, a local man that evacuated from the area by driving to a safe area on his motorcycle. NBCLA reporter, briefly, interviewed him.

“Yeah, so it’s getting pretty close,” George said. “So, right there at the top of the hill, there’s two ridgelines over, but you can see the oil field is just over around the corner. The fire has worked its way up. So those those initial oil structures up there are starting on fire.”

George elaborated.

“But I think they’re trying to protect the neighborhood on the far side. So, there’s a lot of houses that are north of us from here. And those north houses we’ll see. Those are kind of in I would say I would be concerned over there. I’m going to be getting my family out here.”

Over the next few days, the fires raged on. Though only 28% of it was contained, it continued to spread. There were evacuation warnings to urge others to leave the area. Over 4,000 people evacuated from their homes and areas on Thursday. Another 2,700 people evacuated on Friday. Firefighters and emergency responders were able to get things under control. Despite these efforts, people are facing a changed reality.

Cause of the Wildfires

The wildfires were said to be caused by high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. In fact, Public Information Officer of the Ventura Fire Department, Andrew Dowd exemplified more on these causes on CNN.

According to Dowd, he believed that the fire was a “very dynamic situation” that was caused by dry weather, steep and rugged terrain and dry fuel. However, he and the rest of the Fire Department are investigating more into causes of the fires. This way, they could implement solutions for the safety of the community.

These factors played a role in the formation of the fires and its spread. Such events have catastrophized the already torrid temperatures and environments that breed them.

Effects of the Wildfires

Many people’s homes and properties have been dismantled. As a result, many residents are in shelters, wondering what is to come next. 1,400 structures have been affected and one destroyed. Areas are left vacant. Once people lose their businesses, they lose the money necessary to sustain themselves.

A local man, Anthony, who was evacuated, gave his input on the fires’ effect on his family’s livelihood. He told his story to Fox 11 Los Angeles.

“Hmm…we were actually, my mom and I were making lunch. A friend came up and he said,” ‘have you been outside?” Anthony said. “And dad was off in off road vehicle checking the fire, We walked outside and it was just in our backyard, And, it was that quick. And it was just pack everything up get out like it was.”

Anthony proceeded to show his cell phone. His backyard was filled with fire.

“It was pretty hectic. That was my backyard. I just grabbed the motorcycles and documents and that’s it.”

Despite the circumstances, he and his family were able to evacuate.

Livestock was impacted. Many were burned and injured by the fires.

Aftermath

While the fires have been contained in Canyon, there are fourteen other fires that had occurred in the Southern California area. People are picking up the pieces of their lives as the landscape is changed, forever. Homes, businesses, and other properties are destroyed, but construction is necessary to renovate them.

Dowd said to the reporter.

“I live in this community. My family is here. You know, all of us live in this community. So, when we say, it affects us personally as well. This is not just homework. This is our community.”

He went on.

“And I think what we are encouraging all residents in the area to do is to be prepared for these type of emergencies. So, to prepare your home. Have a plan for what you’re going to do in case of evacuation orders are given. Make sure your residence is prepared that if you’re in the wildland, urban area.”

Among other things, Dowd gave other instructions for residents in the local community to protect their property. His concern is for the safety of his community. It is imperialistic that drastic measures are taken to ensure the safety of the people and recovery of lost properties, livestock, and businesses is upheld in this crucial time of development. As people recover whatever is lost, they will have to grapple with the possibility of experiencing the repercussions of the fires. The people of Ventura County, LA County, and other surrounding areas in Southern California have a long road of recovery ahead of them. Their tenacity and courage will ensure the recovery is seamless, yet integral to the rebuilding of their lives.
