Overview:

Mystic, Connecticut is one of New England’s most charming destinations, offering history, culture, food, and fun for all ages. From the last operating steamboat in the U.S. to world-class aquariums, nature centers, summer concerts, and waterfront rentals, the town blends rich heritage with modern attractions. After relocating to Mystic, the author shares the top five activities every visitor should experience for an unforgettable getaway, whether for a day trip or a full summer escape.

Mystic, Connecticut, is one of the most desirable towns in the state to live and visit. With the Mystic Seaport Museum, nearby Atlantic beaches, and the Mystic River, the town offers something for everyone—from history enthusiasts to food lovers.

Boasting historic homes, beautiful landmarks, and countless restaurants, Mystic has earned its reputation as a foodies’ paradise. Its sport-fishing and boating industries bring in visitors from across the U.S., while the Mystic River—a tidal estuary rather than a true river—offers unique biodiversity for nature lovers.

Since relocating to Mystic this past June, my wife and I have had the chance to explore the best of what the town offers. Here are the top five activities to add to your itinerary.

1. The Sabino: Last Original Operating Steamboat in the USA

The Sabino is the last regularly operating wood-coal-fired steamboat in America. After a storied history—including sinking once and being restored—it now calls Mystic home.

Daily cruises include 30-minute, 90-minute, and 2-hour trips, with the 5:30 PM evening cruise being a highlight. The BYOB-friendly ride includes a stop at HARING’s seafood restaurant for food pickup. Prices range from $36–$50 per ticket.

2. The Mystic Aquarium

A family favorite, Mystic Aquarium is home to beluga whales, African penguins, sea lions, and northern fur seals. In 2025, the aquarium celebrated the first northern fur seal birth in over 20 years.

Exhibits include Dino Seas, an immersive look at prehistoric sea life, alongside classic tanks brimming with colorful fish. Children’s programs and adult-friendly amenities like craft beer at the Saltwater Café make this a must-see for all ages.

3. Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

Perfect for hikers and families alike, this nature center combines conservation with education. Trails wind through forests and fields, with opportunities to view rehabilitated birds like owls and hawks.

Programs for children, including homeschool activities, help foster a love of nature. For outdoor enthusiasts, it’s an excellent spot for a woodland walk or picnic.

4. Summer Sounds Concert Series at Mystic River Park

Every Tuesday evening in the summer, Mystic River Park hosts the Summer Sounds Concert Series. Featuring a rotating lineup of local artists across genres, these free concerts are family-friendly and welcoming.

Visitors often bring picnic baskets or grab takeout from nearby restaurants, and the park’s proximity to Mystic Park Ice Cream makes it a perfect summer outing.

5. Mystic Seaport Boathouse Rentals

For a more hands-on aquatic adventure, visitors can rent sailboats, rowboats, and pedal boats at the Mystic Seaport Boathouse. Rentals are available daily from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Prices range from $22–$35, though members enjoy free access. Sailboat renters must provide proof of prior sailing experience for safety reasons.

The Perfect Summer Destination

From historic steamboat cruises to world-class aquariums, Mystic is more than just a tourist town—it’s a place where memories are made. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a summer getaway, these five activities ensure a truly unforgettable experience.
