By William Barber:
Hundreds of people gathered at the inaugural Mississippi Card Show on Saturday, July 19th, for a day of fun and excitement. Hosted by VXV Events at the Mississippi Trademart in Jackson, Mississippi, the Mississippi Card Show gave collectors of sports cards the chance to buy, sell, and trade. For years, people have been collecting player cards related to many different athletic competitions. There was no doubt that the Mississippi Card Show had something for the fans and card collectors of baseball, football, and professional wrestling. However, it was also an event where followers of other fandoms were able to have a wonderful time, too.
The Mississippi Card Show had a broad range of attractions. In addition to die-hard sports enthusiasts, fans of various interests, including Pokémon, anime, Magic: The Gathering, and Star Wars, also came out to enjoy the festivities. It was a gathering like no other.
Celebrity Guests
The Mississippi Card Show provided attendees with a massive treat as they got to shake hands with well-known celebrities. The guests included were:
- Major League Baseball Legend Dwight Gooden
- Original Pokémon Voice Director Michael Haigney
- NFL Legends Pierre Thomas and Jimmy Smith
- Wrestling Legends: Lex Luger and Rick Steiner
Dwight Gooden, who played for various Major League Baseball teams, broke the rookie record for strikeouts in 1984 when he finished his first season with 276. This was when he was just 19 years old. In a different world from baseball, Michael Haigney helped shape the tone and humor of the Pokémon series. He was the original English voice director and script adapter for the first four seasons.
Going back to sports, Pierre Thomas played a significant role in the New Orleans Saints’ victory at Super Bowl XLIV, scoring the team’s first touchdown on a 16-yard screen pass, contributing to the 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts. On the other hand, many regard Jimmy Smith as one of the most excellent wide receivers in Jacksonville Jaguars history. Of his many accomplishments on the gridiron, one of Smith’s most iconic performances came in 2000 when he racked up 291 yards and three touchdowns against the Ravens.
Both Lex Luger and Rick Steiner are WWE Hall of Famers who competed in many wrestling organizations. Luger is a two-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion and one-time WWA World Heavyweight Champion. Rick Steiner, best known as one-half of the legendary tag team, the Steiner Brothers, with his brother Scott Steiner, held multiple tag team and singles championships.
Collectible Groups and Organizations
In addition to meeting legends, attendees of the Mississippi Card Show were also able to interact with collectible organizations representing both sports and multiple areas of pop culture and entertainment. Shows like this have vendors that carry scarce and sought-after items. This provides people with an excellent opportunity to discover something they may have been searching for for years.
Gaming
You couldn’t talk about this past Saturday without mentioning the games that attendees were able to both play and receive tutorials for. In addition to a buy-sell-trade area, other activities included:
- Learn to Play Games Zones
- Free Play Area for All Card Games
- On-Demand Tournaments
- On-Site Registration and Hands-on Learning
- How to Collect Seminar
- Standard & Sealed Events
There were pinball games galore, with machines based on all aspects of pop culture. Additionally, video games were played with themes from Jurassic Park to A Nightmare on Elm Street. “Gundam Card Game,” based on the “Gundam” series, was played by fans of the program. They could express the world of this program through unit, pilot, and base cards. People thoroughly enjoyed themselves! The other games representing aspects of pop culture that were played at the Mississippi Card Show included the following:
- Magic: The Gathering
- Pokémon
- Disney’s Lorcana Trading Card Game
- Flesh and Blood
- Yu-Gi-Oh!
- Star Wars Unlimited
- One Piece Card Game
- Digimon Card Game.
A substantial reward was available for participants in a special Magic: The Gathering tournament. There was a chance to win five thousand dollars!
Significance of The Mississippi Card Show
It’s intriguing to note that the Mississippi Card Show also provided the opportunity for cosplayers to get their photo taken. This reveals something exciting. The fact that some people chose to cosplay at this event demonstrates that card shows, overall, are becoming so much more than how they have been perceived in the past. Sports fans are coming together with anime and Star Wars enthusiasts, while die-hard cosplayers, who frequently attend comic cons and other types of conventions, are now also attending card shows. For a while, many may have never thought this was a plausible scenario.
As big as card shows have been in the past, recent ones have been flipping the cards (no pun intended) on how to attract fans. By providing an outlet that is just as enjoyable for sports fans as it is for Pokémon enthusiasts, card shows offer many the opportunity to have fun. One could persuasively argue that card shows serve as a platform for individuals with diverse interests to come together. This past weekend, the Mississippi Card Show certainly proved that.
Final Thoughts
The inaugural Mississippi Card Show was a phenomenal event. Hundreds of people got the excellent opportunity to meet their favorite celebrities while playing all sorts of card and video games. Attendance was over 1500. The festivities all took place within the traditional realm of a card show. That is, attendees were still able to buy, sell, and trade sports cards.
However, they were also able to celebrate different forms of entertainment. Card shows are starting to bring together people with a broad range of interests. What many in the past may have perceived about these events has undoubtedly changed. They have become so much more than just a regular get-together of collectors.
Indeed, they are a way to further explore your passions and have fun with others. The first-ever Mississippi Card Show showed that one can not only pick a card. It also showed that participants can choose not just one card, but many cards as well!!
