Readers gathered on Thursday, October 9, to discuss Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, the 2023 historical novel by Lisa See. The group explored the story’s depiction of Asian culture, women’s lives, and traditional medicine, while sharing their own strong reactions to the novel’s darker moments.

The Lawndale Library Book Club recently met to discuss Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, a 2023 novel by acclaimed author Lisa See. The book is based on the real life of Tan Yunxian, a female doctor in 15th-century China. Her story highlights the complex intersection of gender, medicine, and cultural expectations.

Though the novel is historical fiction, it draws deeply from nonfictional sources. It offers readers a glimpse into how women supported one another through strict traditions and social barriers. During the meeting, participants reflected on Tan Yunxian’s journey. They also examined the intricate cultural details that See weaves throughout the narrative.

Chinese Culture

The group discussed how the book portrays the way beauty was perceived in ancient Chinese culture, including practices like foot binding. Men admired women’s small, bound feet as a symbol of attractiveness and status. For many in the club, this cultural element was shocking and difficult to read about. One attendee noted that the focus on women’s feet was “a weird cultural experience.” It shed light on how beauty standards can shape—and distort—society’s view of women.

The conversation also turned toward the book’s more troubling and emotional scenes, including the depiction of harsh medical practices and cultural taboos. Members admitted to disliking certain characters, including the doctor figure. They expressed sympathy for Tan’s struggles for autonomy and respect. “There’s no happy ending,” one participant shared. However, others appreciated how the story honored women’s strength, intellect, and care for one another.

Overall Review

Despite the discomfort some felt with aspects of the story, the group gave the book high praise overall. Several members rated it “more than five stars.” They admired See’s research into ancient Chinese medicine. They also appreciated her portrayal of how women passed down healing knowledge through generations.

The discussion wrapped up with reflections on how much has changed—and how much hasn’t—when it comes to women’s empowerment, beauty standards, and the right to define one’s own life.
