Guelph, Ontario — Police in Guelph are investigating an alleged assault involving a pellet gun after a Facebook Marketplace phone transaction fell apart on Thursday. Authorities say a man had a weapon pulled on him in a parking lot after refusing to buy what he believed to be a counterfeit iPhone.
Investigation Underway
Guelph police responded to reports of a man possibly carrying a firearm in a Claire Road West parking lot. Upon arrival, officers located and arrested a male suspect connected to the alleged altercation.
According to investigators, the confrontation stemmed from a planned phone sale arranged through Facebook Marketplace.
Purchase Goes Wrong
The victim told police he met with a seller and her boyfriend to purchase an iPhone 17. After examining the device, he believed the phone was not authentic and declined to proceed with the sale.
At that point, the seller’s boyfriend reportedly grew aggressive, pulled out a gun, and attempted to strike the buyer. The buyer told officers he was able to block the attack and momentarily grab the suspect’s free hand, disarming him in the process.
Aftermath of the Encounter
The victim later determined the weapon to be a pellet gun. He dropped it to the ground and immediately left the area in his vehicle. Police confirmed the man has since been released with no charges.
