Overview:

Comic Cons are popular all over the world. Thousands of people cosplay as their favorite movie, TV, or cartoon character. In addition, they shake the hands of celebrities at these events. However, it is important to understand just why so many people love comic cons and what people experience them.

Comic cons are everywhere nowadays. People from all over the world cosplay as their favorite TV or movie persona, comic book icon, or cartoon character. Celebrities from all walks of pop culture and entertainment appear as guests at comic cons. This gives fans the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to talk to their heroes, get an autograph from them, and get a selfie with them. There are also specific conventions that cater to certain genres. For instance, some events may focus on horror. Meanwhile, others highlight genres such as anime, manga, or entertainment from specific decades of pop culture, like the eighties or nineties.

With the thousands of people who attend comic cons or other related conventions yearly, the question remains. Why do we love going to these events? Also, what can one experience at them?

Sense of Belonging

Comic cons are a place where people can finally attend an event where others share the same interests. One could argue that in the past, it was difficult for many who had specific passions, whether they were comics, anime, manga, superheroes, horror, comedy, science fiction, pro wrestling, or anything related to pop culture, to gather with others who shared similar ones. Attending a pop culture convention gives people the opportunity to meet both celebrities and people with the same interests. Furthermore, fans of Star Wars or Star Trek can have discussions about their favorite episodes with other followers of the franchises.

Opportunity to Get Out of the House

In addition to the sense of belonging that attending comic cons provides people, for many, it’s a way to get out of the house. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, many types of professional positions were transitioning to a remote setting. Although many people returned to the office after the peak of the pandemic subsided, a significant number still work from home.

Although working remotely has its benefits, it can possibly lead to feelings of loneliness and a desire to socialize with others. Comic cons let people leave home and have fun.

Even if you are someone who does not perform their job duties virtually, attending a comic con is a getaway from the overall pressures of life.

Many people have claimed that there’s a sensational feeling that hits people once they enter the doors of a convention. Personally, I find it to be like the characters in “The Wizard of Oz” entering the Emerald City.

Networking and Educational Opportunities

At many comic cons and pop culture conventions, fan panels take place. While many panels discuss aspects of film and television, others focus on specific practices such as writing, graphic design, comic book illustrations, and various other topics.

These panels are presented by individual professionals, organizations, podcasters, and even fan groups, to name a few. Presenters of fan panels can discuss and demonstrate their professional skills. On the other hand, the attendees who are in the audience are given the rare opportunity to learn about a particular craft. This could include how to make cosplay costumes, excel at graphic design, or even sew.

While at the panels, it’s a perfect opportunity to network, as the presenters meet attendees and vice versa. Networking goes a long way in many professions, as ‘who you know’ is essential in numerous instances.

Opportunity to Creatively Express Oneself

Cosplay contests are a giant part of comic cons. Both children and adults get a chance to not only dress up as their favorite movie or cartoon character but also possibly win a competition.

For many individuals, including myself, every day is Halloween. What I mean by that is that not only do I enjoy the same types of movies year-round, but I also enjoy dressing up in costume even if it’s not October 31st. Comic cons and anime fests occur at various times throughout the year.

Cosplaying provides a chance for people to express themselves in a creative manner. The amount of effort that many people put into their outfits is amazing. That shows the passion that many people have for comic cons.

Even if you don’t particularly want to enter a costume contest, you can still have fun dressing up. Of course, some people prefer not to dress up, and that is perfectly acceptable as well. Regardless of whether you choose to participate in a cosplay contest, dress up without entering, or refrain from dressing up altogether, you will be treated to a remarkable display of individuals adorned in costumes ranging from Dennis the Menace to Thor to Sailor Moon.

Once-in-a-Lifetime Chance to Meet Celebrities

Celebrities from all walks of entertainment have been guests at pop culture conventions all over. I can say from experience that meeting and talking to celebrities at comic cons is truly a treat. You have the opportunity to obtain an autograph, take a selfie, or have a professional photo op with the celebrity guests. In addition, many celebrities have Q&A panels. In these panels, attendees are given the chance to ask them questions.

Comic Con Culture

Pop culture conventions have grown significantly to the point where they can arguably be considered a part of our culture. Everywhere you look, there are signs for comic cons, anime fests, and even conventions related to specific genres like wrestling, horror, sci-fi, and so much more. You can argue that the words ‘con’ and ‘cosplay’ have become a part of everyday vernacular.

Comic cons allow fans to meet celebrities and others who share their interests. They are a wonderful networking opportunity for many individuals and organizations. Also, you’d be amazed at what you can learn by attending a fan panel.

I predict that pop culture conventions will only continue to grow. I feel that the increase is a good thing. Ultimately, it is an indicator that people are enjoying themselves. Enjoying oneself is an important part of the human experience!
