Boca Grande, FL– Nearly two months after the harrowing shark attack that injured 9-year-old Leah Lendel off Boca Grande, Florida, there have been no additional shark incidents reported in the area. Officials remain vigilant, but local waters appear to have returned to normal.

In June, Leah was seriously injured while snorkeling just off Boca Grande Beach. Construction workers applied first aid before she was airlifted to the hospital, where she underwent a six-hour surgery. Surgeons successfully restored blood flow to her hand using arteries from her leg and stabilizing the bones with pins. Fortunately, she regained movement in all her fingers.

While Florida does see a higher number of unprovoked shark bites—14 reported in 2024, half of all U.S. cases—these interactions remain extremely rare given the millions of people who swim in its waters each year. Still, experts advise continued caution, especially during warmer months when shark activity increases.
