LOS ANGELES — Ty Dolla $ign brought his unmistakable Los Angeles sound to FX’s The Drop: Neighborhood Sessions, a South Los Angeles celebration marking the arrival of The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, the new series expanding the world established by the acclaimed drama Snowfall.
Held at Somerville in Windsor Hills, the event blended live music, appearances by members of the cast, community experiences and an advance screening of the series, creating a launch rooted in the same Los Angeles culture that serves as the backdrop for the story.
Ty Dolla $ign emerged as one of the evening’s musical highlights, performing for guests as the celebration connected contemporary Los Angeles music with a series centered on an earlier transformative period in West Coast hip-hop.
The performance brought another generation of the city’s music scene into an event built around a story examining how Los Angeles culture evolved as the crack epidemic of the 1980s gave way to the emerging West Coast rap movement of the early 1990s.
Members of the The Drop: A Snowfall Saga cast also joined the celebration, including Gail Bean, Isaiah John, Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith and Simmie “Buddy” Sims III.
Bean and John reprise their Snowfall roles as Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons, whose lives enter a new chapter as Los Angeles itself undergoes a cultural transformation.
Rather than simply recreating Snowfall, The Drop shifts the focus toward the growing influence of West Coast rap. Wanda believes the emerging music movement has the potential to reshape American culture and sets out to bring together new talent while navigating the intersection of music, ambition and street politics.
Her journey brings her cousins Lamar Kinsey, played by Asante Blackk, and James Kinsey, played by Peyton Alex Smith, into the story alongside local rapper Artillery, portrayed by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III.
Leon, meanwhile, is attempting to leave his former life behind and pursue a different path through a free legal clinic, creating another perspective on what rebuilding a life can look like in a changing Los Angeles.
The South Los Angeles setting made Neighborhood Sessions particularly fitting for the series.
The celebration extended beyond the screening and performances, incorporating local businesses, food and interactive experiences into the event. The gathering offered audiences an introduction to The Drop that connected the fictional world of the series with the real community and musical culture that helped inspire it.
Ty Dolla $ign’s appearance further strengthened that connection.
As an artist closely associated with contemporary Los Angeles and West Coast music, his performance provided a bridge between the era portrayed in The Drop and the generations of artists who followed.
The result was more than a conventional television premiere event. Neighborhood Sessions positioned the launch as a celebration of Los Angeles music, community and storytelling while giving audiences an early look at the direction of the Snowfall universe.
The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premiered September 8 on FX and Hulu. The eight-episode series follows Wanda and Leon in 1990s Los Angeles as the fallout from the crack epidemic intersects with the emergence of West Coast rap and a new generation seeking opportunity through music.
