According to Spanier, simplifying the permitting process would allow entrepreneurs to focus on innovation rather than administrative hurdles.

For some companies, even routine upgrades or renovations can become lengthy bureaucratic challenges.
Richard Skeoch, Company Director at Hyperion Tiles, shared how permit delays affected his company’s operations.
“We got stuck in paperwork for months just trying to update our showroom,” Skeoch said. “The whole thing was confusing and slow. If we could handle it all online, we’d have more time for customers and less time fighting with forms.”
Digital permitting systems, Skeoch notes, could help modernize local government processes and reduce delays for businesses.

Startups often face the steepest learning curve when navigating regulatory systems.
Falah Putras, owner of Japantastic, said permit complications slowed his company’s early operations.
“When we launched Japantastic, we got buried in local permit paperwork,” Putras said. “The process was so confusing it held up our inventory and frustrated our suppliers.”
Putras now advises new entrepreneurs to begin permit applications months before opening, but believes the process itself should be more accessible.
“If the system were simpler, new businesses could actually open their doors and start making money faster.”
Complex Tax Rules Also Impact Business Productivity
Beyond permits, some entrepreneurs say local tax regulations can consume valuable time and resources.
Jake Brander, President of Brander Group Inc., says the complexity of local tax compliance often pulls employees away from productive work.
“In Scottsdale, Arizona, United States, we spend way too much time on local taxes,” Brander said. “I have to pull my team off client work just to figure out these rules.”
Brander believes clearer regulations could help companies focus on innovation and customer service rather than administrative tasks.
