Robert Mueller, the former FBI director and special counsel who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, has died at age 81, according to the Associated Press.
In addition to his service as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, overseeing the agency during a period of transformation following the September 11 attacks, he returned to government service in 2017. He was the special counsel until 2019.
As special counsel, Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and examine whether members of Donald Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia. The investigation became a major focus of political debate in the United States.
Mueller’s final report, released in March 2019, found insufficient evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia. However, it detailed multiple instances in which Trump sought to influence the investigation. The report did not reach a conclusion on whether Trump committed obstruction of justice. This was due in part to longstanding Department of Justice policy against indicting a sitting president. Mueller’s work is expected to be revisited as part of assessments of his legacy.
Trump repeatedly criticized the investigation during and after Mueller’s tenure as special counsel, describing it as a “witch hunt” in public statements and on social media.
Background
Robert Swan Mueller III was born on August 7, 1944, in New York City. He was raised in Princeton, New Jersey, and later in the Philadelphia area. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Mueller graduated from Princeton University in 1966 and earned a master’s degree from New York University the following year.
During the Vietnam War, he served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer who won multiple military honors such as a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a law degree in 1973, Mueller had a career in public service as both a federal prosecutor and U.S. attorney. In 2001, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to be Director of the FBI.
