Fourth of July Unrest in Newport Beach Leads to Hundreds of Arrests

Fireworks, barbeques, and celebrations galore took place all across the United States this past weekend as millions of people celebrated the Fourth of July. However, amid the festivities, unrest broke out in Newport Beach, California. On the evening of July 4, people blocked roads, set garbage bins on fire, and caused widespread disturbances in Newport Beach beginning around 7 p.m. Moreover, authorities reported that individuals attacked police officers during the mayhem.

City officials and the Newport Beach Police Association have attributed the violent gatherings to invitations that originated from viral postings on social media platforms like TikTok. Upon the reporting of the civil unrest, the Newport Beach Police Department acted promptly. As a result, police arrested many individuals, while several civilians and police officers suffered injuries.

The Gathering

Like many communities across the United States, Newport Beach welcomed large numbers of visitors throughout the day on July 4. However, by the afternoon, tensions became increasingly apparent. According to city officials, viral social media posts promoting a ‘TikTok Takeover’ encouraged people to gather near Newport Pier.

Violence Ensues

By the time that the afternoon morphed into the evening, the peaceful gatherings of people that had converged on Newport Beach quickly turned to massive disruptions. Groups blocked major intersections as the situation became increasingly confrontational. Authorities said additional people arrived after videos of the gathering spread across social media, further increasing the size of the crowd. Crowds rapidly filled the Balboa Peninsula.

Rioting and Law Enforcement Collide

As the disruptive gatherings began to multiply, an unlawful assembly was declared by the Newport Beach Police Department. 350+ officers were drawn in from 17 regional law enforcement agencies, including the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol.

As additional officers arrived and the crowd continued to grow, confrontations between law enforcement and some members of the crowd became increasingly likely.

During confrontations between police officers and members of the crowd, skirmish lines were formed whereby police units on horseback worked to push back crowds. Police and members of the crowd remained in confrontation for nearly two hours before Newport Beach issued an emergency alert enacting immediate beach closures. Barricades were put in place to prevent more vehicles from entering the Balboa Peninsula.  Order was finally restored around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5th.

Newport Beach police officers arrested more than 400 people. In addition, a total of 44 civilian injuries occurred. There were also multiple police injuries. This included an incident in which an exploding mortar-style firework struck an officer.

Further Comments from Local Officials

In response to the Fourth of July unrest, Newport Beach Mayor Lauren Kleiman said that the behavior from the rioters is such that “will not be tolerated” and warned offenders to “never return.” Kleinman also voiced her criticism concerning parents who she said: “sent their kids here without chaperones, good sense, or respect for law enforcement.” Meanwhile, Joe DeJulio, President of the Newport Beach Police Association, described the event as a “TikTok Takeover.”

Looting, Emergency Closures, and Lost Revenue

The unrest over the Fourth of July weekend also resulted in effects on local businesses, including the Pavilions grocery store on West Balboa Boulevard. This business saw the looting of merchandise, the vandalism of aisles, and smashed debris in the parking lot. Moreover, many restaurants, bars, and shops closed early to protect employees and patrons. Unfortunately, this resulted in these businesses experiencing lost revenue, which was especially harmful during peak holiday sales.

Residents Report Damage and Disruptions

In addition to businesses, local residents also experienced negative effects from the weekend disruption. Local residents in the area even reported the destruction of street signs. Residents reported overturned trash cans, smashed vehicle windows, and fires set in the middle of residential streets. Some families remained trapped inside their homes for hours.

Newport Beach as a July 4th Destination

Newport Beach has a reputation as being a primary destination for Fourth of July vacationers and celebrators. In fact, some Fourth of Julys have seen anywhere from 50,000 to over 100,000 day-trippers and holiday visitors. According to the City of Newport Beach, the Balboa Peninsula gained a reputation during the 1980s and 1990s for large alcohol-fueled Fourth of July gatherings. Eventually, though, local officials were able to put a damper on this issue. They did so by establishing strict “Safety Enhancement Zones.”

Looking Ahead

The Fourth of July unrest in Newport Beach showed how quickly holiday gatherings can escalate. In the end, law enforcement agencies succeeded in restoring the peace. However, the events mentioned above resulted in wounded police officers and civilians, ruined properties, and traumatized citizens. City officials are investigating the events and reviewing ways to improve public safety at future celebrations. Many in Newport Beach hope future Independence Day celebrations will celebrate family, fireworks, and community—not unrest.
