For more than a decade, Ghostbusters fans worldwide have celebrated Ghostbusters Day with costumes and movie props. It is celebrated on June 8th in commemoration of the original Ghostbusters, released on June 8, 1984. Ghostbusters has remained a fixture of popular culture for over four decades. In addition, Ghostbusters Day 2026 will once again celebrate a franchise that has had a lasting impact on popular culture. Ghostbusters Day 2026 is expected to provide fans and newcomers alike with opportunities to celebrate the franchise.
How Ghostbusters Day Got Started
Unofficially, Ghostbusters Day began in 2014, the year of the 30th anniversary of the original film’s release. That year, Ghostbusters (1984) returned to the screen from Sony Entertainment in 700 locations in restored and remastered 4K. However, it wasn’t until 2016 that June 8th was designated as Ghostbusters Day. That year, Ghostbusters Day was promoted with the release of the Ghostbusters reboot. Since then, Ghostbusters Day has become an annual celebration. Also, the Ghostbusters franchise has grown. In the past decade, two new Ghostbusters films were released: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). In addition, Ghostbusters’ video games and merchandising have reached new heights. This has helped maintain the franchise’s visibility in popular culture. As Ghostbusters Day 2026 approaches, fans continue to watch for announcements and celebrations related to the franchise.
Cultural Impact of Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters has had a lasting cultural impact since the release of the original film in 1984. A box-office success that grossed more than $243 million domestically and $296 million worldwide, the film has remained a fixture of popular culture for decades through memorable characters, scenes, and references in movies, television, and online media. In 2015, the Library of Congress selected Ghostbusters for preservation in the National Film Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance. Ghostbusters Day 2026 will provide another opportunity to recognize the franchise’s enduring legacy and influence on popular culture.
Ghostbusters in Popular Culture
Beyond characters and scenes, memorable movie quotes can serve as one indicator of a film’s cultural impact. It appears that Ghostbusters had an effect on the suffix “-busters.” According to Salma Hegab in an article published in ScreenRant, after the release of Ghostbusters (1984), “Scholar W.A. Brewer started noticing the suffix’s usage growing exponentially, to the point that by July the following year, 50 different words incorporating “-busters” were cataloged.”
As for subsequent films, the success of the original Ghostbusters led to a sequel in 1989, the aforementioned reboot in 2016, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). The franchise also expanded into television through The Real Ghostbusters (1986–1991). The animated series remains one of the most recognizable extensions of the Ghostbusters franchise. The franchise later expanded with the animated series Extreme Ghostbusters, which introduced a new cast and direction.

How Fans Celebrate Ghostbusters
The longevity of a film franchise can also be reflected in how its fans continue to celebrate it. Ghostbusters merchandise, once aimed primarily at children, now includes collectibles for adult fans such as the Plasma Series Proton Pack, Ghost Trap, and P.K.E. Meter. At comic cons and pop culture conventions worldwide, adults and children often dress as their favorite Ghostbusters characters.
Ghostbusters fan clubs, groups, and organizations continue to operate throughout the United States and internationally.
Since its launch in 2014 and official recognition in 2016, Ghostbusters Day has offered fans many ways to celebrate. In 2018, Sony Pictures and its partners offered fans the opportunity to “win a Grand Prize Experience,” including “lunch for the winner and a guest with Dan Aykroyd” as well as a VIP studio visit and other Ghostbusters-themed experiences.
Conventions that have coincided with Ghostbusters Day have also developed their own related programming and events. For example, Wizard World in 2019 presented the first-ever Ghostbusters Fan Fest.
