The upcoming memoir—published by a division owned by investment giant Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR)—chronicles Portnoy’s journey from a small-time newspaper hustler to one of the most recognizable media figures in America. Notably, KKR co-owned Toys “R” Us before its 2017 bankruptcy.

In true “El Presidente” fashion, Portnoy introduced the book with his trademark humor and bravado:

“1st things 1st. This cover F***.

Anyway 22 years ago I started a paper route. Turned it into a media empire. Created a lot of fans and enemies along the way. Sold the company for 600 milly. Bought it back for a buck. Sometimes life is actually stranger than fiction. This is the story of @barstoolsports.”

About the Book

According to the official Simon & Schuster description, Cancel Me If You Can dives into Portnoy’s unapologetic approach to life, media, and controversy. The publisher describes it as a candid, unfiltered narrative of how Portnoy “refused to bend the knee to those who tried to tear him down.” It offers readers insight into the successes, stumbles, and stubborn authenticity that built Barstool Sports into a cultural phenomenon.

“This isn’t a memoir or a business book—it’s another bet on himself,” the publisher writes. “But honestly, would you really want to bet against him?”

The book promises behind-the-scenes looks at Barstool’s evolution from a four-page broadsheet distributed around Boston in 2004. It grew to a nine-figure digital media brand employing over 300 people and powering more than 150 sub-brands. Portnoy also opens up about his ventures into sports betting, his viral pizza reviews, and his philanthropy through the Barstool Fund. This fund raised over $41 million for small businesses. Additionally, he talks about his animal rescue efforts, including support for shelters through his drink brand Lucky One Lemonade.

A Story of Risks, Rewards, and Rebounds

While Cancel Me If You Can covers familiar Barstool milestones, it also digs into the personal risks Portnoy has taken. These risks include professional and private ones. Known for his blunt commentary and refusal to play by corporate media rules, Portnoy acknowledges the polarizing nature of his brand but remains unfazed by criticism.

The book, described by the publisher as “another bet on himself,” encapsulates Portnoy’s defiant philosophy. It advises to take risks, own your failures, and never apologize for being authentic.

Cancel Me If You Can will be available in hardcover and ebook formats in 2026. It is currently available for pre-order through Simon & Schuster at this link.
