Overview:
Presence News visited Canon’s Burbank service center in March 2026 after a cinema camera malfunctioned during cross-country travel for conference coverage. Despite previously being described by Canon as one of its “most advanced service and support centers,” staff at the location told Presence News that technicians are no longer stationed there and that repairs must now be shipped to another Canon facility.
BURBANK, California — In 2017, Canon publicly celebrated the opening of what it described as one of its “most advanced service and support centers” in the United States, located in Burbank, California—an area long associated with the film, television, and production industries.
Nearly a decade later, however, a recent visit by Presence News suggests that the location’s role may have significantly changed.
In March 2026, Presence News visited the Burbank service location after scheduling an appointment to troubleshoot a cinema camera that had malfunctioned during coverage of a large conference in Miami Beach, Florida. The equipment failure occurred during a cross-country trip to film interviews and coverage at a conference featuring roughly 300 exhibitors and hundreds of attendees.
According to Presence News’ on-site experience, the Burbank location currently appears to no longer offer on-site technical service, with customers being directed to send equipment to another Canon facility for repair. A receptionist at the location told Presence News that technicians have not been working at the Burbank facility for some time and that she does not have any experience using cameras to assist with troubleshooting. The receptionist also stated that the facility’s studio area is no longer open for public viewing.
Visit to the Burbank Location
Presence News arrived at the Burbank service center expecting assistance with troubleshooting the camera issue. After waiting over an hour, including a period when the sole staff member present had stepped out for lunch during posted open hours, Presence News was informed that the Burbank location no longer staffs on-site technicians.
Instead, the staff member stated that all service technicians are now working out of Canon’s facility in Costa Mesa, California.
When Presence News asked whether the staff member had experience using cinema cameras or could offer troubleshooting advice for the issue, the employee reportedly responded that she did not have experience using cameras and suggested the problem sounded like user error.
The staff member further advised that if service was required, the camera would need to be shipped to another Canon location and that joining the company’s membership-based service program could help facilitate the repair process.
A Shift From the Original Vision
When Canon first announced the Burbank facility in 2017, the company highlighted the center as a hub designed to support professionals in the entertainment and production industries.
The location sits in the heart of the Burbank Media District, an area known for housing major studios, production companies, and equipment rental houses.
At the time of the opening, Canon emphasized the center’s role in:
- Supporting professional photographers and cinematographers
- Providing technical service and equipment support
- Serving the broader Southern California creative community
For filmmakers, journalists, and production crews operating on tight schedules, proximity to a service center has historically been a key advantage.
Challenges for Working Crews
For independent media outlets and documentary crews, equipment reliability—and the ability to quickly troubleshoot problems—can be critical when covering live events or major conferences.
Presence News experienced the camera issue shortly before conducting interviews and filming coverage at the Miami conference. Traveling crews often rely on nearby service centers when technical issues arise during production schedules.
Without immediate troubleshooting support, repairs may require shipping equipment across the state or country, potentially causing delays during time-sensitive coverage.
The Broader Context
Manufacturers across the professional camera industry have increasingly shifted toward centralized repair facilities and membership-based service programs, particularly for high-end cinema equipment.
Programs such as Canon Professional Services (CPS) are designed to provide faster repair turnaround times and loaner equipment for qualified members, but access to those benefits typically requires enrollment.
For independent journalists, freelancers, and smaller media organizations, the cost and logistics of these programs can influence equipment decisions and workflows.
Looking Ahead
As the media industry continues evolving—particularly with smaller digital outlets producing broadcast-quality video—reliable technical support remains an important factor in camera system choices.
Presence News reached out to Canon for clarification regarding the current staffing and service capabilities of the Burbank location and whether the facility continues to operate as a full professional service center.
Updates will be added to this story if additional information becomes available.
