Waymo Rolls Forward: How Google’s Self-Driving Car Could Disrupt New York’s Taxi Industry

As New York City’s skyline evolves, another transformation looms — this one on its streets. Waymo’s driverless vehicles are no longer the stuff of tech demos or futuristic concept videos. They’re operational, learning, and improving with every mile.

For decades, the yellow cab has symbolized New York. It is a human-driven lifeline for millions of riders and an economic backbone for thousands of drivers. But Waymo’s technology may soon alter that balance. With no driver required, the labor cost per ride effectively drops to zero. That means lower fares, 24-hour operation, and a fleet that never takes breaks. These are advantages that traditional taxi companies can’t easily match.

Taxi Medallions

If Waymo or similar self-driving networks were to deploy across the five boroughs, the impact could be seismic. Taxi medallions — once worth over a million dollars — have already plummeted in value due to ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft. A fully autonomous fleet could accelerate that decline. It would leave many long-time drivers without work and further erode the traditional taxi economy.

Still, the transition raises questions. How will New York City regulate cars without drivers? Who will be liable in the event of an accident? And can artificial intelligence truly navigate the city’s famously unpredictable traffic and pedestrians?

For now, Waymo continues to test and refine. But with its latest models logging millions of autonomous miles across Arizona, California, and now appearing in videos closer to urban hubs, it’s only a matter of time. Soon, New Yorkers will share the road — or the ride — with cars that drive themselves.

Note from Kasdyn: I am 95% sure I saw someone get in a Waymo with no driver just like an Uber. Crazy! Ughhhhhh

Editor’s Note:

Presence News received exclusive video footage showing a Waymo vehicle in operation. While its expansion to New York City has not yet been formally announced, its arrival would mark a major milestone in urban automation. This change could forever alter how people move through America’s largest city.
