Max Verstappen posted mixed results in Monaco Grand Prix practice

MONACO — May 23, 2025

Max Verstappen took to the winding streets of Monte Carlo today in preparation for the 2025 Formula 1 Gran Premio di Monaco. He piloted his Oracle Red Bull Racing RB21 Honda RBPT under clear skies. The reigning World Champion showed early form with a second-place finish in the first practice session. However, he dropped to 10th in the second, highlighting the unpredictable nature of F1’s most legendary street circuit.

The combined timesheets saw Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the top. He was followed by Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton. This trio signals a potentially dramatic weekend ahead.

A Circuit Like No Other

The Circuit de Monaco is Formula 1’s crown jewel — and its most brutal test. With its ultra-narrow layout, tight corners, and elevation changes through the hills of the principality, Monaco demands perfection. One wrong move can send even the best into the barriers.

While the sun shone bright over the Riviera, the track was still considered “green” early in the day. It offered minimal grip due to a lack of rubber buildup. As drivers pushed their limits, traction improved. Yet, Monaco’s unforgiving design means success comes down to threading the needle—over and over—without a single mistake.

Verstappen’s Challenge

Verstappen is renowned for his aggressive precision and dominance on open circuits. But in Monaco, finesse and patience matter just as much as outright speed. His P2 result in the first session showed confidence and control. By the afternoon, traffic, evolving track conditions, and setup tweaks saw him fall down the order.

Yet, anyone familiar with Verstappen’s record knows not to count him out. The Dutchman often uses Friday’s data to springboard into weekend dominance.

Eyes on Qualifying

In Monaco, Saturday often determines Sunday. Overtaking is notoriously rare on race day, making qualifying perhaps the most important session of the weekend. With every team now in overnight strategy mode, the margins will tighten. A single tenth could mean pole or P10.

For Red Bull and Verstappen, there’s refinement still to be done. But as the defending World Champion has shown time and again, pressure often brings out his best.
