More States Expected to Raise Minimum Wage in 2027: What Workers and Employers Should Know
By Presence News
As 2027 approaches, several U.S. states are preparing to increase their minimum wage, while many others are expected to announce automatic cost-of-living adjustments later this year.
For workers, higher minimum wages may provide additional income to help offset rising living costs. For employers, the changes may require updates to payroll systems, hiring budgets, and labor planning.
States with Scheduled 2027 Increases
Several states already have 2027 minimum wage increases established through state law or automatic adjustment formulas.
- California is expected to increase its statewide minimum wage to $17.40 per hour on January 1, 2027, through its annual inflation adjustment.
- Connecticut is scheduled to increase its minimum wage to $17.48 per hour beginning January 1, 2027.
- Michigan is scheduled to raise its statewide minimum wage to $15.00 per hour on January 1, 2027, with future increases tied to inflation.
- Nebraska will begin annual inflation-based adjustments after reaching its previously approved $15.00 minimum wage.
Additional States May Increase Wages
More than a dozen states use automatic inflation indexing to determine annual minimum wage adjustments. If inflation remains positive, workers in states including Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington could also see higher minimum wages in 2027.
Most of these updated rates are expected to be announced during the fall of 2026 after official inflation data becomes available.
Local Minimum Wages Continue to Rise
In addition to statewide increases, many cities maintain their own local minimum wage ordinances that exceed state requirements. Municipalities such as Seattle, San Francisco, and West Hollywood have minimum wages significantly higher than their respective state minimums, with some local rates already exceeding $20 per hour.
Employers operating in multiple cities should review both state and local labor laws to ensure compliance.
Impact on Businesses
Minimum wage increases can affect businesses in several ways, including:
- Higher payroll expenses.
- Changes to hiring and staffing strategies.
- Adjustments to pricing or operating budgets.
- Payroll software and compliance updates.
Businesses with hourly employees are encouraged to monitor official announcements from their state labor agencies before January 2027.
Looking Ahead
While several states already have confirmed increases scheduled, many additional states will determine their 2027 minimum wages through automatic inflation formulas in the coming months. Workers and employers alike should stay informed as official rates are announced before the start of the new year.
As wage laws continue to evolve across the United States, both employees and business owners may see additional changes aimed at balancing worker compensation with broader economic conditions.
