How Glen Helen Became a Motocross Mecca — A Brief History
Glen Helen has a rich legacy that traces back to its founding in 1985 by motocross legend Dr. Bud Feldkamp. Feldkamp, an accomplished off-road racer and desert champion, brought his passion for dirt sports to life when he established the raceway in San Bernardino against a dramatic hillside backdrop. Over the decades, Glen Helen evolved from a modest sand and off-road racing site to a world-class motocross and off-road facility hosting some of the biggest events in the sport:
- 1985: Glen Helen Raceway is established with sand drag events and off-road racing.
- 1988: First motocross events are held at the track.
- 1989–1991: Glen Helen hosts rounds of the U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross.
- 1996: The track hosts its first AMA Motocross National, a milestone that solidified its status on the national stage.
The track’s signature hills — including the famed “Mt. St. Helen” — have been among the most filmed and photographed terrain in motocross.
The Man Behind the Track — Bud Feldkamp
Dr. Bud Feldkamp is not just the founder — he’s motocross royalty. Before building Glen Helen, Feldkamp earned notoriety as a champion off-road racer, with multiple wins in events like the Baja 1000, Baja 500 and Mint 400.
