GARDENA, Calif. — The City of Gardena recognized local artist Gustavo Zermeño Jr. on Saturday, May 30, for his mural honoring American figure skater Alysa Liu.
The mural is located behind COE’s Glass & Mirror at 15532 Crenshaw Blvd. in Gardena. The artwork features multiple images of Liu performing on the ice. For instance, one portrait depicts Liu holding a gold medal and draped in the American flag.
Liu is shown in different skating poses in additional scenes. The artwork incorporates blue and white design elements that emphasize movement and complement the skating scenes.
A Tribute Through Public Art
During the recognition event, Zermeño received a certificate of recognition from the City of Gardena. Photographs from the ceremony show the artist holding the certificate in front of the mural. They also show him standing alongside city representatives and community members who attended the presentation.

According to information provided at the event, Zermeño began work on the mural in late February. He completed the project in early March. The artist’s signature and social media handle appear near the bottom of the artwork.
The mural joins other public artworks by Zermeño in the Los Angeles area and depicts Alysa Liu in multiple skating poses.
City representatives and community members gathered at the mural site during the recognition ceremony to congratulate Zermeño on the project and its addition to the Gardena community.
